It is made of … Read more This neoclassical umbrella stand features a caged cylindrical frame with ring accents and a footed base. It is made of heavy wrought iron with a rough, hammered texture and gilded with gold leaf. Three substantial rings at the rim are each 5/8" thick and 3" in diameter. The form, texture, and base metal harken to a Gothic, Spanish, or Brutalist aesthetic. At the same time, the gilding softens and feminizes the form, adding a glamorous, Italian Neoclassical or Hollywood Regency twist. Additionally, the tripod base contributes a spade-shaped, footed detail, and naive etchings on each foot suggest leaves were the artist's intent. The welded construction does not use screws or bolts, which points to a custom, handmade item by a skilled metalsmith.
