These … Read more An English pair of wooden armchairs, with richly carved decorative details and elegant proportions, from the early 20th century. These antique chairs from England, executed in the George II/Irish Rococo Revival taste and showing the influence of Giles Grendey, each featuring an elaborately pierced and molded backsplat embellished with flowing foliate and scrollwork beneath a gracefully swagged crest rail enriched with floral carving. The backs are supported by shaped uprights with additional carved ornament and a distinctive central pierced roundel. The beautifully curved open arms terminate into boldly scrolled knuckles, and curvy arm posts. Upholstered seats are generously proportioned. The chairs are presented on carved cabriole legs with acanthus-carved knees and terminating in claw-and-ball feet at front, while the rear legs are more of a classic Queen Anne style. The existing upholstery is in need of a refresh; an excellent opportunity to customize the fabric to your personal design aesthetic. Arms are approximately 28.25 inches measured from the floor. This early 20th century pair of English armchairs combine comfort with a strong decorative presence, and would be well suited as occasional, library, or living room accent chairs. See less
