It wears a faux tortoiseshell finish in the écaille peinte tradition of classic European cabinetry, in the spirit of Karl Springer's tortoise lacquer and the opulent rooms of Maison Jansen. Translucent amber and deep brown stains are layered over a metallic gold base. Light passes through the color, reaches the gold beneath, and gives the frame a luminous, three-dimensional depth. Gilt accents warm the bamboo turnings, which frame five tiers of clear inset glass shelving.

Made in the United States in the mid 20th century, this vintage piece pairs a Mid-Century Modern silhouette with Hollywood Regency glamour. It is in the style of Tony Duquette, Dorothy Draper, James Mont, and Billy Haines, the designers who made faux bamboo and more-is-more drama a signature. The frame is metal, finished in paint and gilt, with glass shelves. At 30" wide, 14" deep, and 73" high, it works as an amber-toned display cabinet, curio shelf, glass bookcase, bar back, or library shelving. It suits Chinoiserie, Grandmillennial, Palm Beach, and traditional interiors. See less
