19th Century Anglo-Indian Faux Tortoiseshell, Carved Bone and Ebony Inlaid Jewelry Box with Elephant Motif
An exceptional 19th-century Anglo-Indian jewelry casket, exquisitely handcrafted with richly figured faux tortoiseshell veneer, intricate hand-carved bone finely engraved decoration. Resting on elegant carved paw feet, this remarkable box is a superb example of the refined craftsmanship produced in India for the British colonial market during the Victorian period.
The architectural sloping lid is lavishly decorated with delicate pierced bone latticework, engraved floral borders, and a finely carved central elephant medallion, a revered symbol of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune in Indian decorative arts. The striking contrast between the warm amber and chocolate faux tortoiseshell veneer and the intricately carved ivory-toned bone creates a richly textured surface that immediately captures attention.
The front retains its original lock and key, framed by beautifully engraved bone strapwork inspired by campaign furniture and luxury traveling caskets of the 19th century. Every surface reflects the extraordinary level of craftsmanship associated with the finest Anglo-Indian decorative arts, making this piece equally suited as a jewelry box, document casket, keepsake box, or sophisticated decorative object.
Highly desirable among collectors of Anglo-Indian furniture, British Colonial antiques, Victorian decorative arts, and Grand Tour objects, this rare box offers timeless appeal and exceptional decorative presence in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
