Pair of Brighton Pavilion Revival Bamboo, Rattan and Caned Armchairs, Circa 1970s
Inspired by the celebrated Anglo-Chinese interiors of the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, these beautifully crafted Brighton Pavilion Revival armchairs embody the timeless appeal of natural materials, refined craftsmanship, and architectural design. Although the style traces its origins to Regency England, where Chinese bamboo furnishings inspired generations of cabinetmakers, these examples were most likely produced by one of the highly skilled workshops in the Philippines or Hong Kong during the 1970s, when finely crafted rattan furniture became synonymous with sophisticated coastal and Palm Beach interiors.
Far more elaborate than the majority of Brighton chairs encountered today, these examples exhibit an exceptional level of decorative detailing. The gracefully arched crest rails frame an open gallery of finely turned spindle work, while the backs feature geometric Chinese fret lattice panels centered beneath circular medallions, echoing traditional Chinese window designs. Additional fretwork adorns the aprons, with diamond corner motifs and carefully proportioned horizontal rails creating a composition that is remarkably architectural in character.
Their rich honey-toned finish has developed a warm, mellow patina that beautifully highlights the natural variation of the bamboo and rattan. Unlike many later examples with darker stains or heavy lacquer, these retain an inviting warmth that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Constructed from bamboo, bent rattan, reed bindings, and hand-caned seats, every joint is reinforced with tightly wrapped reed, a hallmark of quality craftsmanship. The removable vintage cushions reveal the original cane beneath, allowing the chairs to be enjoyed with or without upholstery.
The complexity of their construction, abundance of decorative elements, and balanced proportions place them well above the average Brighton Revival examples. Their custom-like appearance gives them the presence of architectural furnishings rather than simple wicker seating, making them equally suited for refined living rooms, sunrooms, conservatories, libraries, covered terraces, or Palm Beach-inspired interiors.
Elegant, comfortable, and visually striking, these chairs celebrate one of the most enduring decorative traditions in furniture design while offering a level of craftsmanship and detail seldom found in comparable Brighton Pavilion Revival seating.
