Antique German cotton batting Santa Claus figure made for the American export market, featuring an expressive hand-painted composition face, ivory cotton coat and hood, and an original twig Christmas wreath.
Dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s, this early holiday figure reflects the German tradition of producing handcrafted Christmas decorations for American buyers. Santa has a molded composition face with painted blue eyes and white brows, a full cotton beard, small composition hands, black belt, and black boots.
He holds a natural twig wreath decorated with red berries, paper leaves, preserved greenery, and an original paper banner reading “Merry Christmas.” The softly aged ivory coloring and folk-art construction give the figure an especially appealing early Christmas character.
