This screen reminds me of Japanese Kimono, with a gold background fabric and heavily embroidered peacocks. It’s very tactile and arty. It been gold leafed for the background and the peacocks are done with a very thick impasto, that is raised and built up off the screen much like Japanese moorage. Maitland-Smith was founded in Hong Kong in 1979 by Paul Maitland-Smith, a London antique dealer, specializing in handcrafted 18th-century furniture reproductions and fine decorative accessories. In the 1950’s Paul Maitland-Smith worked as an antique dealer in London before moving to Hong Kong to launch an artisan-based manufacturing operation. The brand grew famous for high-end accent furniture, lighting, and whimsical decorative objects, later showing collections at major markets like the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, North Carolina. He focused on pre-machine-age methods including lost-wax metal casting, hand-carved tropical mahogany, marquetry, parquetry, and hand-tooled leather. Pieces frequently incorporate exotic wood veneers, pen shell, eggshell inlay, and hand-painted accents. His pieces are sought after for the quality, whimsicality, and because they’re drop dead gorgeous. This piece would make a fabulous headboard, or as art on a wall, or for the corner of a room. I use a screen for a headboard in my bedroom. It makes my very traditional brown furniture beautiful. I think if you add exotic elements and antiques to your decorating, magic happens. See less
