Developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these low-slung, armless chairs were intentionally designed for portability and specialized indoor tasks. The armless framework allowed women wearing expansive Victorian dresses to sit comfortably while knitting, sewing, or nursing. Its folding mechanism was designed as space-saving "campaign" style furniture, allowing it to be easily packed away or moved out of sight. See less
