a magnificent centerpiece in the shape of a large seashell, crafted from polychrome hard-paste and vitrified porcelain, entirely hand-decorated. The piece was created by the renowned german manufacturer c.g. Schierholz & sohn in plaue, thuringia, and dates back to 1890. The imposing structure, measuring 13.5 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, weighs 1.340 kg. It reproduces the natural ridges and grooves of a seashell with extraordinary realism, resting on small feet integrated into the stem. The exterior surface is embellished with a rich and meticulous cascade of floral and fruit elements in relief (plastic application technique or "encrusted flowers"), including roses, carnations, and small forget-me-not sprigs. They are meticulously crafted and painted in a delicate palette of pastel shades blending into pink, purple, and yellow, with elegant highlights in pure gold along the wavy edge. On the base of the object, impressed on the ceramic core, is the model number "2024," accompanied by the rare underglaze blue mark of two crossed and overlapping beams, one of the oldest marks used by the manufacturer (specifically, mark number 2 shown in the photo immediately below this , taken from one of our french volumes). This specific mark was temporarily introduced around 1890, as noted in the notes to our volume, to emulate the style of the prestigious meissen swords, before being withdrawn following legal challenges from the saxon manufacturer itself. The object exhibits a splendid and authentic antique patina, free from invasive restoration work, which testifies to its excellent state of preservation and the high level of craftsmanship typical of late historicism and german neo-baroque art of the 19th century.
