Antique victorian copeland blanc de chine centrepiece of exceptional sculptural quality, dating to approximately 1890–1900 and retailed by the prestigious london firm t. Goode & co.
the composition features four exuberant winged cherubs supporting a richly modelled shell-form bowl, standing upon an elaborate pierced base of scrolling acanthus leaves intertwined with flowering thistles. Executed in copeland's celebrated blanc de chine porcelain, the piece displays remarkable modelling and crisp detail throughout.
the underside bears the impressed copeland factory mark together with the impressed model number 38, and retains the printed retailer's mark for t. Goode & co., london, one of britain's most distinguished luxury retailers during the victorian and edwardian period. Glazed blanc de chine porcelain.
this is an unusually large and decorative example, suitable as a centrepiece, or sculptural figural display object.
condition:
presented in good antique condition overall. There are no noticeable discolorations, apart from some minor age-related marks inside the bowl.
there are several historic losses, including:
one cherub with a partial loss to a hand.
two cherubs at either end each with the loss of one wing.
one missing thistle flower head.
two missing thistle stem tips held by the cherubs, and one old repair to a thistle stem.
these condition issues are relatively discreet and are not immediately apparent during normal display, but are visible upon close inspection.
