artist jean santilli (lyon, 1948) born in lyon to parents from abruzzo, he earned a degree in american literature in his hometown and, at the age of twenty-two, won a competition held by san josé state university in california, where he taught for one semester. During his stay in california, he became interested in ceramic art. At the end of his teaching assignment, he returned to europe and settled in bussana vecchia, the abandoned village in the sanremo hinterland where, in the 1960s, the ceramicist mario giani—known as clizia—had founded the international artists’ community. In bussana, he set up a workshop for preparing and firing terracotta and opened a studio, adopting the artist name messer nicolò. From then on, he devoted himself to producing ceramics using the raku technique—a japanese method that originated in the 16th century in kyoto within the zen tradition and was traditionally applied to bowls used in the tea ceremony. He is the author of the book *ceramica selvaggia: manuale-manifesto per una ceramica alternativa* (wild ceramics: a manual-manifesto for alternative ceramics), a theoretical and practical text dedicated to clay, traditional firing methods, glazes, and the raku technique. His presence in bussana had a direct influence on other artists in the community, including the latvian ceramicist simone montalieu, who adopted the raku technique in 1976 after meeting santilli.
