An important Art Deco ceramic footed bowl designed by Margarete Heymann-Löbenstein for the pioneering Haël-Werkstätten in Marwitz. Produced around 1930, it reflects the innovative spirit of German modernism, combining bold hand-painted abstraction with refined craftsmanship and one of the most influential ceramic workshops of the interwar period.

Condition

Good vintage condition. Several small chips to the underside of the rim, visible from below and documented in the photographs. No cracks or restorations. The hand-painted decoration remains exceptionally vibrant and well preserved.

About the Designer

Margarete Heymann-Löbenstein (1899–1990) was one of the leading innovators of twentieth-century ceramic design. After studying in Berlin and at the Bauhaus in Weimar under Gerhard Marcks, she founded the Haël-Werkstätten in 1923 together with her husband Gustav Löbenstein. The workshop quickly gained international recognition for its progressive forms, expressive decoration, and technically accomplished glazes, becoming one of the most important centres of German Art Deco ceramics.

As a Jewish entrepreneur and designer, Heymann-Löbenstein was forced to leave both her company and Germany following the rise of National Socialism. She emigrated to England, where she continued her ceramic career. Today her work is represented in major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bauhaus-Archiv, and the Bröhan Museum, and is increasingly recognised as a cornerstone of European modernist design.

About the Manufacturer

Founded in Marwitz in 1923, Haël-Werkstätten became one of the most innovative ceramic workshops of the Weimar Republic. Its production combined the formal clarity of the Bauhaus with the decorative freedom of Art Deco, creating ceramics that remain among the most desirable examples of German interwar design.

Design

The shallow bowl rests elegantly on three integrated feet, giving the form a light, floating appearance. Its abstract hand-painted decoration combines fluid cobalt-blue lines with turquoise washes, yellow accents, and fine black graphic details, creating a lively composition that balances geometry with spontaneity. The restrained ivory ground allows the painterly decoration to remain the focal point, while the tripod base reinforces the sculptural character of the piece.
