A charming pair of antique French tin-glazed earthenware plates dating from the 18th century, likely produced in the south of France, possibly in the Moustiers or Marseille region.
Both plates feature a scalloped rim and a traditional floral decoration entirely hand-painted in a palette of blue, green, yellow, and manganese. The slightly irregular shapes, minor firing imperfections, and free brushstrokes attest to the artisanal character of early French earthenware.
The plates bear significant traces of their history. They exhibit cracks, chips, and losses to the rims. One of them has several old metal staple repairs visible on the reverse. This traditional method was once used to preserve ceramics before the advent of modern restoration techniques.
Despite their condition, these two plates remain particularly decorative and would be perfectly suited to a collection of antique French earthenware or to a striking wall display.
