Designed by Kaj Franck for Finel / Arabia, this Finnish vitreous enamel over steel bowl was produced during the mid-20th century, circa 1960s–1970s. The hemispherical form is finished in deep cobalt blue with a continuous light blue ornamental frieze encircling the upper body. Its restrained decoration and functional profile exemplify the principles of Scandinavian Modern industrial design for which Kaj Franck became internationally recognized.
Constructed from heavy-gauge steel with a durable vitreous enamel finish, the bowl was designed for both everyday utility and decorative display. The documented form and decorative border are characteristic of Finel production associated with Kaj Franck. An excellent example of Finnish enamelware, it remains desirable among collectors of Scandinavian design, modernist housewares, and twentieth-century industrial design.
