A captivating and highly collectible Japanese Sumida Gawa (Sumida ware) pottery bowl dating to the late Meiji or early Taisho period (circa 1890–1920). This striking oval basin features the iconic, hand-sculpted sculptural relief titled "Ten Men Looking Into a Pond."
Ten individual, dimensionally applied figures wrap around the rim, peering intently over the edge into a beautifully pooled, dark flambé and multi-colored drip-glazed well representing water. The exterior figures are clad in distinctly textured, low-fired green, brown, and patterned white ceramic kimonos. The upper basin drops sharply into an unglazed, matte red-orange slip-painted base. The underside displays a clear, handwritten black ink signature reading 良齋 (Ryosai), verifying production by the renowned Tokyo workshop of Inoue Ryosai.
A quintessential example of export-era Japanese ceramic art, perfect for specialized collectors or as a whimsical, character-filled statement piece for global-eclectic interiors.
