This listing is for a grandfather clock from the family of Harriet Beecher & Calvin Ellis Stowe.
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an author and abolitionist, known for writing, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Her husband, Calvin Ellis Stowe (1802-1886) was a Biblical scholar, who worked to spread public education across the US.
This grandfather was commissioned during the turn of the century (circa 1900) by Harriet and Calvin's youngest son, Reverend Charles Edward Stowe (1850-1934). In commemoration of his late parents, his father's coat of arms were engraved into the base. The coat of arms depicts a leopard's head above a ducal coronet between 2 spread wings. The lower reads in Latin, "Inter feros per crucem ad coronam." The motto translates to, "Among the beasts, through the cross, to the crown."
Charles moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1919. He brought the clock with him from New York. The clock resided in Santa Barbara until his death in 1934. The clock then passed to Charles's daughter, Hilda Donnelly, but she ended up parting with it. She left it in the care of some family friends that brought it to the Los Angeles area. In the 1950s, the clock was placed in a carriage house in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. It remained there until 2024 when the descendants of these family friends decided to sell the property.
The clock is an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship. It was produced by Daniel Pratt's Son, a Boston firm, retailing high end time pieces. The clock features a wooden case with carved detailing and lions paw feet. The clock has an 8 day time/strike movement. It is complimented by a 2 tone metal dial with scrolling moon phase calendar. The mid section has beveled glass allowing one to view the brass weights and pendulum.
The clock measures about 24.75 x 94.75 x 13.25 inches
