Designed by Judson Rothschild for the Rothschild Collection in 2006, this substantial “Wheels of Fortune” coffee table transforms traditional French furniture forms into something decidedly more theatrical.
The long, painted wood table features an intentionally distressed black ground accented with hand-applied gilt and silvered highlights. Its shaped and molded top is fitted with two beveled-glass inserts, each revealing an elaborate carved sunburst or wheel medallion below. A serpentine apron embellished with silvered acanthus ornaments and delicate gilt scrollwork is supported by six gracefully curved cabriole-style legs.
At 66 inches long, the table has the scale needed to anchor a large seating arrangement while its open base and slender legs prevent it from appearing overly heavy. It would be particularly striking in a Hollywood Regency, French eclectic, maximalist or contemporary interior where one dramatic antique-inspired piece is called upon to command the room.
The deliberately aged painted surface and flashes of gold and silver give the table the character of a centuries-old European find, yet its 2006 date makes it practical for present-day interiors. See less
