The design … Read more This is an antique early ironstone serving platter, manufactured in England during the early-to-mid 19th century, circa 1815–1840. The design is heavily inspired by the highly collectible "Scroll Landscape and Prunus" and related Chinoiserie styles popular during the late Georgian and early Victorian eras.
The center features an unrolled hand-painted document scroll showcasing bright orange peonies and delicate green foliage. Extending out from behind the scroll are blooming pink cherry or plum blossoms attached to stylized dark blue tree branches.
The rim is beautifully molded with a subtle scalloped edge and basketweave/dot relief patterning along the inner verge. It is decorated with an alternating floral garland border mirroring the central burnt orange, mazarine blue, and vibrant green color scheme.
These vibrant over-glaze enamels have been meticulously hand-painted over a transfer-printed under-glaze outline.
The platter is made of heavy, durable earthenware—likely Mason’s Patent Ironstone or a competing Staffordshire pottery such as Minton or Spode. This style of ceramic was engineered to mimic expensive imported Chinese porcelain while offering superior structural strength for everyday use. The side profile confirms its thick build and flat rim profile built for serving large roasts or family-style meals.
The front side shows a beautifully preserved glossy glaze with minimal fading to the enamel work. The underside features a clear unglazed footing ring showing signs of age-appropriate shelf wear.
There are no prominent printed manufacturer marks visible in the center of the base. However, a faint, blind-impressed stamp appears near the rim. The factory pressed a metal die directly into the wet clay before the platter went into the kiln. The stamp reads IRONSTONE CHINA. The lettering is blocky, uppercase and rustic, highly characteristic of early Staffordshire potteries operating during the late Georgian period (circa 1820–1835).
It’s not remarkable that there is no factory or potter name attached to this stamp (like "Mason's" or "Meir"). In early 19th-century England, many companion potteries produced these high-quality Chinoiserie blanks and decorated them but left the stamp generic so large export merchants could sell them under their own labels.
The stamp sits just outside the unglazed foot ring. The dark, gritty coloration inside the letters isn't ink—it is decades of micro-particles of dust and shelf-wear captured inside the raw, pressed indentations of the clay body, confirming that this is a genuine piece of early English Regency-era ironstone utility ware rather than a later reproduction.
