It was designed by Chrysler’s Art and Color Department. During this era, the department was heavily influenced by Virgil Exner’s famous "Forward Look" styling initiative, which prioritized jet-age aerodynamics and streamlined shapes.
This ornament is made of chrome-plated die-cast zinc alloy. Zinc alloy was preferred by mid-century manufacturers because it could easily be cast into intricate, sharp and highly complex aerodynamic shapes. The cast metal was then polished and coated in bright chrome plating to give it a mirror-like, luxurious shine.
Over time, moisture penetrates the micro-cracks in the chrome plating, causing chemical reactions with the underlying zinc. This results in the tiny bumps and surface "pitting" seen on this piece—typical for surviving original Mopar ornaments of this era.
