ENTRYWAY COLLECTION - American Heritage Style
A beautifully preserved 18th-century French walnut oil jug with a warm chestnut-brown glaze, handsome rounded form, and centuries of authentic surface character. Originally used for storing and pouring walnut oil in the French countryside, its sculptural silhouette, hand-thrown construction, and naturally weathered finish make it equally compelling as a decorative accent or as part of a collection of early French provincial pottery. Display it on a farmhouse table, open shelf, or cupboard where its rich patina and honest craftsmanship can be fully appreciated.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
While many surviving French walnut oil jugs were made with applied side handles, examples like this are considerably less common. Collectors often seek these handleless forms for their clean, uninterrupted profile, which highlights the elegant proportions of the vessel and its beautifully glazed surface. They represent a distinctive regional variation within the long tradition of French provincial utilitarian pottery. Dates circa 1740-1770.
