An exceptional example of Victorian craftsmanship, this antique calling card case is fashioned from richly molded gutta-percha, a durable natural resin widely used during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Highly prized for its ability to capture intricate detail, gutta-percha allowed artisans to create elaborate decorative objects that combined beauty with everyday utility.
The exterior is lavishly decorated in high relief wax seal seal style with an extraordinary array of classical portraits, maritime scenes, symbolic emblems, and scrolling ornament. The front features medallion-style profiles inspired by the heroes, philosophers, and warriors of antiquity, framed by an exuberant network of foliate decoration. Each vignette is carefully rendered, creating a captivating visual narrative that reflects the Victorian fascination with classical history, exploration, and culture.
The reverse is equally impressive, showcasing a detailed sailing vessel under full rigging alongside additional scenic and symbolic motifs. These maritime elements evoke the age of global trade and adventure that characterized the nineteenth century, adding further historical interest and decorative appeal.
The case measures 4 inches deep, 2.75 inches wide and 0.50 inch high. Weighs 48 grams. Good antique condition with signs of wear and use. Small areas of losses. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
The deep black patina has developed beautifully over time, highlighting the remarkable molded detail and lending the piece a rich, sculptural quality. Every surface has been thoughtfully ornamented, transforming a practical personal accessory into a miniature work of art.
Originally designed to hold calling cards, the essential social calling card of Victorian society, this case today stands as a remarkable collectible and decorative object. Its unusual iconography, extensive relief decoration, and authentic period material make it highly desirable for collectors of Victorian decorative arts, antique personal accessories, and gutta-percha objects.
A rare and visually striking survivor from the nineteenth century, this antique gutta-percha calling card case beautifully captures the elegance and social customs of the Victorian era.
