Instruments of this type were associated with performance, storytelling, and in some cases symbolic or ritual contexts, where music played a role in communication and cultural expression.
Carved from a single piece of wood, the instrument features a long, flat resonating body with linear channels where strings would have been attached and tensioned. The upper section is finished with a carved figural element, adding both visual interest and cultural significance to the piece. Remnants of stringing remain, highlighting its original function and use.
The surface shows a rich patina from age and handling, emphasizing its authenticity and history. Today, pieces like this are valued not only as musical instruments but also as sculptural objects that reflect the craftsmanship and traditions of the Zaramo.
