Reserved historically for royalty and high-ranking individuals, it embodies authority, lineage, and refined craftsmanship within Baule courtly culture.

Carved from a single block of wood, the chair typically features a gently curved backrest and seat supported by four solid legs, often connected by stretchers for stability. The proportions are compact yet elegant, designed for dignified seating rather than lounging. Its sculptural simplicity is balanced by careful attention to form: smooth planes, rounded edges, and harmonious symmetry.

Surface patina is an important element of authenticity and character. Older examples often display a rich, darkened sheen from handling, oiling, and long use, along with visible tool marks and natural age cracks that testify to their history.
Within Baule society, the Kétéklé chair functioned as a symbol of political power and social rank. To sit upon such a chair was a visible affirmation of status. It served not only as furniture but as a statement of identity and legitimacy.

Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
