Reflecting typical facial features found on many Igbo maiden spirit masks, it is renowned across Igbo land, particularly among the Northern Igbo. These masks symbolize delicate beauty and the feminine essence.
Traditionally, Agbogho Mmuo maiden spirit masks were worn by men of middle rank in secret societies. Repainted before each use, they feature finely carved, delicate features with light coloring and dark scarification. Cosmetic markings are often present near the ears, forehead, eyes, and cheeks.
These masks play a significant role in Okkperegede dances, honoring the female ancestors or the "Queen of Women." They are also showcased in various ceremonies and social gatherings, including the beginning of the dry season and elaborate funeral ceremonies. During dances, the masks, whether singular or in pairs, portray women engaged in everyday activities such as farming or going to market. Accompanying costumes are vibrant, adorned with colorful cloth appliqués and intricate designs.

Everything in this collection was in their home for more than thirty years. Africa Direct recently bought the collection; at 95, Margie wants to share the things she has loved so much.
