Hand-carved from wood and painted in polychrome pigments, the piece features an elongated abstract zoomorphic form with soaring vertical elements, projecting features, and striking red, white, and blue geometric decoration.
The painted motifs of diamonds, triangles, and dotted patterns are traditional design elements found throughout Burkina Faso and are often associated with spiritual symbolism, ancestral connections, and protective meanings. The dramatic silhouette and stylized animal-like form reflect ceremonial carving traditions in which masks and sculptural forms were used during funerary rites, initiations, and community celebrations.
Among many groups in Burkina Faso, antelope-inspired forms hold deep symbolic importance and are connected to oral histories, ancestral reverence, and the preservation of cultural memory.
