Both groups have long traditions of mask making tied to social organization, initiation rites, and spiritual practice.
Among the Bamana, masks play an important role within age-grade associations and initiation societies that guide young men through stages of knowledge and responsibility within the community. These societies preserve cultural teachings related to agriculture, morality, and the natural cycles that shape Bamana life. Masks often combine human and animal imagery and may incorporate geometric patterns or symbolic forms that represent wisdom, transformation, and the pursuit of knowledge.
The Marka people are also known for their distinctive masks and strong artistic traditions. Historically active as traders and craftsmen across the Niger River region, the Marka developed a reputation for skilled metalworking.
