Made in Scotland during the height of the Victorian fascination with travel and souvenir collecting, the box is decorated with multiple scenes connected to the life and legacy of Scotland’s beloved national poet, Robert Burns.

The lid features a finely detailed view of the Burns Monument in Edinburgh, surrounded by elegant black scrolling corner decoration. Completed in 1831, the monument was designed in the form of a classical Greek temple as a tribute to Burns and reflects the extraordinary reverence with which the poet was regarded only a generation after his death. The front of the box is further decorated with two important Burns landmarks: Burns Cottage, his birthplace, and Alloway Kirk, the atmospheric ruined church immortalized in his famous poem Tam o’ Shanter.

Most fascinating is the inscription across the front: “Made of Wood which grew near Alloway Kirk on the banks of the Doon.”

This remarkable inscription gives the box an especially evocative connection to Burns Country. The River Doon, Alloway Kirk, and the surrounding Ayrshire landscape are deeply woven into Burns’s poetry and personal history. Born in 1759 in a modest cottage in Alloway, Burns became one of Scotland’s most celebrated cultural figures. Works including Auld Lang Syne, Tam o’ Shanter, and A Red, Red Rose secured his international reputation, while his use of Scots dialect helped preserve and elevate Scotland’s literary identity. The box is crafted from warm-toned wood with a wonderfully aged surface, displaying the rich color and patina that only more than 160 years can create. Its unusually generous size makes it especially striking among surviving examples of Scottish souvenir ware. It measures approximately 8 inches wide, 4.75 inches deep, and 1.5 inches high. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and handling. There is a loss to the left side of the interior rim and an interior wood divider appears to be missing.
