Josef Kuba Werkstätte (Josef Kuba Workshop)
A beautiful round covered porcelain box decorated with ornate panels of burgundy and dark green with gold embellishments, and a center picture in the Fragonard style of an idyllic scene of courtship. The inside of the box has a different courtship scene.
These boxes are generally classified as vanity or jewelry jars.
Josef Kuba founded the decorating business in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia, in 1930. Following World War II, he relocated to Germany. Since this piece has the tag marked Carlsbad, should be made before the move to Germany. However, there is also a tag for Kunsthaus Hamburg a centre for art in Germany, where it may have been sold at some time.
About 5¼" diameter, 3" tall. Good vintage condition.
