A beautifully preserved and unusually large antique New England wooden dry measure, handcrafted by Daniel Cragin of Wilton, New Hampshire, and retaining its original forged iron bands, hand-forged iron handles, and warm, richly aged patina acquired through generations of honest use.
Stamped on the interior base with the maker's mark, this substantial dry measure represents the type of vessel once found in farms, country stores, mills, and markets throughout New England. Before standardized manufactured containers became common, measures such as this were indispensable for accurately measuring grain, apples, potatoes, beans, corn, oats, and countless other agricultural commodities.
Expertly constructed of thick wooden staves secured by riveted iron bands, the measure displays exceptional craftsmanship and a beautifully mellow reddish-brown surface that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The substantial forged iron handles provide both strength and visual character while emphasizing its utilitarian heritage.
Based on its interior dimensions, the measure is estimated to hold approximately 16–18 quarts, making it a particularly impressive example. Today it serves equally well as a decorative centerpiece, planter cachepot, blanket or kindling holder, or simply as a striking piece of early American craftsmanship.
We have gently cleaned the piece and applied a light conditioning treatment to nourish the wood while preserving its original finish and authentic patina.

History & Appeal
Daniel Cragin was among the respected New England craftsmen producing wooden dry measures during the nineteenth century, when standardized measuring vessels were essential tools for commerce and agriculture. Built to withstand decades of daily use, these handcrafted measures became fixtures in barns, granaries, general stores, and family farms throughout the region.
Large examples are increasingly difficult to find today, particularly those retaining their original forged iron hardware and identifiable maker's mark. Their sculptural form, honest wear, and exceptional craftsmanship have made them favorites among collectors of primitive Americana as well as interior designers seeking authentic country and farmhouse décor.
Whether displayed on a harvest table, filled with seasonal greenery, holding rolled blankets beside a fireplace, or showcased as part of a curated primitive collection, this substantial New England dry measure brings warmth, history, and timeless craftsmanship into any home.
