A magnificent example of late Victorian silverplate artistry, this richly sculptural centerpiece celebrates the grandeur and symbolism of classical design through an extraordinary arrangement of allegorical figures and ornate repoussé decoration. Rising dramatically from an elegant pedestal, the sweeping shell-form bowl is flanked by two beautifully modeled figural supports: Lady Liberty, proudly raising her torch, and a winged cherub emerging gracefully from scrolling acanthus ornament.
The deeply repoussé body is richly embellished with intricate floral scrollwork, shell motifs, and foliate decoration that demonstrate the remarkable casting and chasing techniques popular during the late nineteenth century. The sculptural figures create visual movement while lending the piece both narrative interest and architectural balance.
Supported by an elaborately decorated pedestal and mounted on a polished hardwood base, the centerpiece possesses exceptional presence whether displayed on a dining table, sideboard, mantel, or library console. Originally intended as an elegant fruit or floral centerpiece, it now serves equally well as a dramatic decorative object showcasing the craftsmanship and exuberance of Victorian silverplate.
Its impressive scale, allegorical imagery, and richly detailed workmanship make it a wonderful addition to collections of Victorian decorative arts, silverplate, Neoclassical design, or historical Americana.
