Antique French Ormolu Mantel Clock by Victor Paillard, Paris – Gilt Bronze Figural Clock, 19th Century
Offered for sale is an exceptional 19th-century French Empire/Louis XVI Revival ormolu mantel clock attributed to the celebrated Parisian bronzier Victor Paillard (1805–1886). Richly cast in finely chased fire-gilt bronze (ormolu), the clock features an elegant urn-form case flanked by two beautifully modeled allegorical female figures, creating one of the finest decorative designs produced by Paillard's renowned Paris workshop.
The seated figure on the left holds an armillary sphere, representing Astronomy or Science, while the figure on the right holds a scroll symbolizing Knowledge or the Arts. The urn-shaped clock case is lavishly decorated with acanthus leaves, laurel wreaths, floral garlands, and classical ornament, surmounted by an acorn finial. The finely enameled white porcelain dial bears the signature "Victor Paillard, Fondeur de Bronzes, Paris," reflecting the high quality associated with one of France's foremost bronze founders during the Second Empire.
The rectangular plinth is further decorated with an elaborate relief panel depicting mythological marine figures amidst swirling waves, adding another level of sculptural richness. Every surface displays meticulous hand chasing and exceptional gilding, hallmarks of Paillard's finest productions.
Victor Paillard exhibited at the Paris Salons and Universal Expositions and supplied luxury bronze furnishings to aristocratic and royal patrons throughout Europe. His works are highly sought after by collectors for their superb casting, elegant classical designs, and museum-quality craftsmanship.
Whether displayed in a grand library, formal living room, office, or distinguished collection, this magnificent clock serves equally as a functional timepiece and an important work of French decorative art.
