An exceptional French Restoration mantel clock depicting Athena (Minerva), goddess of wisdom, strategy, learning, and the arts, standing gracefully beside a classical architectural clock case. Executed in beautifully patinated bronze with finely chased fire-gilt ormolu mounts, this elegant Parisian clock embodies the refined neoclassical aesthetic of the Restoration period.
The richly symbolic composition features Athena wearing a crested Corinthian helmet while holding a gilded sphere representing knowledge and the sciences. Resting atop the case are an armillary sphere, laurel wreath, and a stack of scholarly books, reinforcing the allegory of wisdom, education, and intellectual achievement. The stepped base is adorned with finely cast gilt-bronze military trophies and classical ornament, while the case retains its original deep chocolate-brown patinated bronze finish contrasted by warm mercury-gilt bronze applications.
The original Paris movement is stamped Louis Alfred Baveux, a respected nineteenth-century Paris clockmaker whose movements appear in quality Restoration mantel clocks of this period. The movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell.
Research has identified several closely related Paris Restoration clocks sold through leading European auction houses, confirming this clock belongs to a distinguished group of allegorical French mantel clocks produced during the Restoration period (circa 1825–1835).
An elegant and highly decorative example that would complement both traditional and contemporary interiors while appealing equally to collectors of French bronzes and fine antique clocks.

The original patinated bronze and fire-gilt ormolu retain an attractive aged surface with expected wear and oxidation that contribute to the clock's character. The dial shows light age-related wear. The movement is stamped Louis Alfred Baveux. The movement has not been tested, as no winding key is present, and is being sold as requiring inspection and/or servicing before operation. The front glass bezel is missing. The original bell is present. Please review all photographs as they form part of the description. less
