The vase’s hand-painted décor features an 18th-century courtier wearing a powdered wig, knee breeches and an elaborate orange frock coat. He is picking flowers for a bouquet in a pastoral meadow. The scene continues to a lakeside setting with a French château’s towers silhouetted distantly against a soft sunset sky. This genre of 18th-century "courting" or romantic scenes is heavily inspired by Rococo painters like Jean-Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher.
Both the top rim and base are framed in deep ruby-red enamel accented by rich, heavy gold gilt scrollwork and flourishes, common in Victorian-era French decorative porcelain and luxury glassware.
The signature "Sylve" indicates it was finished by a freelance porcelain and glass decorator. Around 1900, many highly skilled artists worked out of private commercial studios in Paris or the famous Limoges region. These studios bought plain white glass or porcelain blanks directly from factories, hand-painted them with popular romantic historical scenes, added the luxury gold gilding, and fired them in their own small studio kilns for commercial sale. Such blank opaline or milk glass vessels of this shape were heavily manufactured by prestigious French glasshouses like Baccarat or the glassworks in the Lorraine and Paris regions.
