Constructed in the traditional coopered … Read more A handsome antique staved wood firkin or utility bucket dating to the mid-to-late 19th century. Constructed in the traditional coopered manner, individual wood staves fitted and bound with iron banding, secured with square-cut nails at the banding joints, a construction method consistent with American or English production circa 1860–1890. The swing bail handle is wrought iron with a characteristic hand-forged arc form and squared attachment lugs.

The exterior features a Victorian decoupage panel applied to one face, a paper print depicting two women in full crinoline dresses in a period social scene, varnished in place. Decoupage decoration applied to utilitarian wooden vessels was a popular Victorian parlor craft from approximately 1850–1890 and elevates this from a plain firkin to a decorated decorative object. The interior is clean with natural aged wood patina. No lid present. See less
