A compelling matching set of four antique Chinese "Lamp-Hanger" side chairs (Dengguanyi), exemplifying the classic 'vernacular' or 'Country Ming' aesthetic. These are not the idealized palace pieces, but rather the honest, soulful furniture of the up-and-coming merchant and official classes, valued for their robust construction and textured, 'lived-in' presence.
Crafted with a mix of softwoods (for the frame) and textured split-bamboo panels on the seat and back slats, they offer a sculptural, architectural silhouette. All four chairs have been recently cleaned and conditioned with wood oil to beautifully brighten and highlight the rich, warm grain of the wood. These chairs bridge the gap between historic antiquity and the warmth of organic modernism, making them perfect textural anchors for a Contemporary, Bohemian, or Mid-Century space.
Joinery & Structural Details:
True to classic vernacular styling, the primary frames rely on traditional Chinese joinery with sophisticated round dowels and square pegging. Original, tiny iron brads are employed to discreetly secure the delicate split-bamboo slats to the seat and back frames.
To reinforce the seats, each chair features two wooden support bars attached to the underside with screws (fully documented in the provided underside photos). True to their country origin, the wood used for these under-seat bars varies in shape and condition from chair to chair.

The main frames remain structurally sound and sturdy although two are a bit wobbly and care should be taken in considering the weight they would need to support. Honest vintage wear is present throughout, including historic insect scarring on the underside wood. - Under-Seat Bars: On three of the chairs, there is notable age-related splitting on the under-seat support bars where they attach via the screws. - Leg-to-Seat Corner Supports: The original leg-to-seat spandrels/supports were historically attached with nails. Over decades of use, these became weak, damaged, and subject to poor historic repair attempts. - Stabilization Updates: To ensure the chairs are entirely stable and functional for seating, the compromised corner supports on two chairs have been replaced with clean, simplified, custom-cut wooden corner blocks secured with modern screws. Included Original Parts: All salvaged pieces and fragments of the original corner supports have been carefully preserved and will be included with the chairs should the next owner wish to use them for future historic replication. less
