Italy, 1970s/1980s origin italy period 1970s/1980s designer lino sabattini was born in correggio (reggio emilia) on september 23, 1925, to simple, hard-working people. \. At just fourteen, he found work in como in a shop selling banal brass objects. It was not a random choice. Soon he came across an issue of “domus,” gio’ ponti’s magazine. It became his textbook, his bible, his correspondence school. In the brass objects shop he earned a living, but also learned the techniques of metalworking. \. Sabattini, now thirty, left blevio to move to milan where he set up a small workshop in a basement with the essential tools for his work. His ties with “domus” intensified. Now he also met young architects, students of gio’ ponti. One of them brought the master some metal objects created by the young craftsman. One day, ponti showed up at his door. He looked, touched, and gave him an idea to develop. Only three days later, sabattini finished the work. Ponti was thrilled. Thus began a friendship marked by crucial milestones\. From 1958 to 1963, he worked in paris and milan for the famous christofle company, trying in vain to sweep away worn-out, soulless productions. In 1964, he moved to bregnano, a small town between como and milan. He became an entrepreneur thanks to his ideas, his sensitivity, and that diversity that had no place in the contemporary manufacturing world. Thus began his solitary adventure, which took shape at argenteria sabattini, where he created the most limpid and beautiful silver pieces.
