Suite of 8 Swedish gilt and gesso Louis XV/Rococo side chairs. Circa mid 18th century. Features an ornately scalloped frame with shell carvings on the apron and crest. Upholstered in a neutral silk fabric with horsehair fill. Supported by cabriole legs leading to scrolled feet.
Purchased at Sothebys in New York City in the late 1960s for $60,000
Provenance: Estate of Carol Levitan and Jesse Philips
Mr. Philips was both a retailer, as an owner of a Dayton department store, and a manufacturer who transformed a tiny window company into Philips Industries, an enterprise that was sold in 1990 for about $550 million to a British company.
CONDITION
Very good antique condition, light wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, some finish / paint loss, blemishing to fabric, see pictures.

This set of eight mid-18th century Swedish Rococo giltwood dining chairs retains its original character and craftsmanship. The carved gilt and gesso frames display a beautiful aged patina with expected light wear, scattered finish and gilt losses, minor surface marks, and age-related distressing. The silk upholstery shows light blemishes and wear consistent with use and age. The chairs are structurally sound and stable, presenting beautifully while retaining the authentic character expected of important 18th-century antiques.
