This striking object is a vintage or antique Persian Qajar dynasty glass hookah base (historically called a qalyan or nargilah bottle). It features an iconic, hand-painted portrait of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, who ruled the Persian Empire (modern-day Iran) from 1848 to 1896. Hookah bases featuring his likeness were incredibly popular items of royal prestige and continued to be produced as celebratory, nostalgic decor items throughout the 20th century.
The oval medallions on both sides showcase a youthful Naser al-Din Shah Qajar in his signature imperial court attire. He served as the fourth Shah of Qajar Iran from 5 September 1848 to 1 May 1896 when he was assassinated. While he is viewed as the first modern Iranian monarch—one who formally visited Europe and wrote of his travels in his memoirs—his style of governance became more dictatorial over the course of his reign.
The portrait includes his defining historical features—specifically his thick, sharp mustache and highly stylized, dark, curved eyebrows. He wears a tall, black cylindrical hat (the kolah) adorned with a brilliant yellow plume or jewel-encrusted aigrette, a traditional symbol of Persian monarchy. He is dressed in a dark indigo military tunic accented with elaborate gold epaulets, royal medallions and a patterned ceremonial sash.
The hookah’s body is made from hand-blown, slightly tinted clear glass. The rough, unpolished surface visible on the inside of the bottom base shows the pontil mark and typical texture of traditional mid-to-late 19th-century or early 20th-century glass manufacturing techniques.
exterior is lavishly decorated with thick, raised gold leaf or gold enamel (gilt). It features a complex, repeating pattern of organic scrollwork, vines, and stylized floral blooms.
The shoulders of the vessel are embellished with an interlocking lattice or cross-hatched pattern filled with white enameled dots, which frames the central oval portraits beautifully.
Measuring 8.5"h x 4.25"w, this is a slightly compact, beautifully preserved glass base. A qalyan or nargilah bottle (commonly known in the West as a hookah, shisha, or waterpipe base) is the bottom water reservoir used for filtering and cooling tobacco smoke before inhalation. The wide, flanged gold ring at the very top of the neck was designed to firmly hold a wooden or metal sar-e qalyan (the upper stem assembly that carries the charcoal tray and tobacco bowl).
Having the portrait hand-painted on both sides ensured that the monarch's face was always facing outward toward guests, no matter which side the smoking hose was attached to or how the pipe was rotated during social gatherings—the essence of hospitality.
Non smoker? Then, it's a conversation-starting vase.
