Designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904 for the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow, this throne-like armchair features a tall semi-circular back that curves around the seat in a complex lattice of vertical and curved lines, exemplifying Mackintosh's distinctive fusion of geometric form and Art Nouveau sensibility.
Constructed of solid, black-stained ash, the chair's elegant, light-weight latticed frame is hand-assembled with precision carpentry. This is an original licensed piece from Cassina, with the original Cassina logo and inscription on the interior, confirming its authenticity as part of Cassina's authorized re-edition. The seat cushion is original, with original upholstery intact. Cassina relaunched the design in 1973 as part of its I Maestri collection of 20th-century landmark works, marrying Mackintosh's original vision with advanced production techniques.
A new licensed reproduction of the 312 Willow 1 from Cassina retails at €8,015 EUR through authorized European dealers (per Cassina retailer Bruno Arredamenti), with US authorized dealer and vintage market pricing reaching $12,000–$17,000.
Standing approximately 119.5 cm tall, the Willow Throne is both functional seating and an architectural object — a piece widely regarded as one of the defining designs of early modernism.
Dimensions (per Cassina): H 119.5 cm × W 94 cm × D 41 cm; seat height 40 cm (approx. 47" × 37" × 16")"
