This engraving, “Le Premier Pas de l’Enfance”, is a tender 18th‑century French work inspired by Marguerite Gérard, celebrated for her intimate domestic scenes and refined Rococo sensibility. The composition captures a mother encouraging her child’s first steps, surrounded by attentive figures and soft garden foliage; a tableau of affection and grace emblematic of Gérard’s art.
The inscription below reads “Dédié aux bonnes Mères” (“Dedicated to good mothers”), underscoring its sentimental theme. The print bears the note “Retouché par Regnault & par G. Vidal”, indicating later refinement by these engravers, and was sold in Paris by Depeuille, Rue St. Jacques.
The piece retains its original warm‑toned wooden frame, with delicate inlay lines and a subtle patina that complements the aged paper. Minor foxing and toning attest to its authenticity and age, enhancing its charm as a collector’s item.
