A striking pair of Chinese blanc de chine guardian lions rendered in luminous white porcelain and presented in the traditional opposing arrangement. One lion rests a paw upon the brocade ball while its mate is accompanied by a playful cub, symbols of protection and prosperity.
Standing just over fifteen inches high, these are substantially larger than many decorative examples and possess excellent visual presence. Their crisp white glaze and sculptural forms allow them to work beautifully in Chinoiserie, Hollywood Regency, and traditional interiors, whether displayed on a mantel, console, bookshelf, or entryway table.
JJUNE'S THOUGHTS
When I first saw these, my immediate reaction was, now that's a nice size. So many decorative foo dogs are charming but disappear once they are placed in a room. These do the opposite. At over fifteen inches high, they have enough scale to make a statement without becoming overwhelming. What I especially appreciate is the simplicity of the white glaze. Had these been painted in bright enamels, they would feel much more traditional and far less versatile. The monochrome finish allows the sculptural quality to take center stage and lets them work equally well in a coastal home, a collected traditional interior, or even a contemporary space.
