A knole sofa is a 17th century English … Read more This is an elegant large-scale knole sofa of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. A knole sofa is a 17th century English manor house style sofa distinguished by its high back and hinged sides that drop down and are tied with fabric cords to finials on the back corners.

This late 20th century sofa is made of heavy kiln-dried wood with substantial brass hinges that allow the sides to be fully lifted and lowered, a full 180 degrees of movement. The sofa has newer custom upholstery of with neutral blue-beige silk damask with matching pleated skirt and welting. The down-filled bench seat cushion, two down-filled throw pillows, and two button-tufted bolsters are all upholstered in matching silk damask. Substantial carved pineapple finials and custom braided and tasselled cords finish the look. The sofa is unsigned, as it has been reupholstered over the years and the label lost, but the piece is similar in quality and style to knole sofas by Geoge Smith, Baker Furniture Company,

The knole sofa is in very good vintage condition. The sofa shows very well and the hinges function perfectly. The fabric is very clean with no stains, but there are tears to the upholstery on both sides of the sofa, as well as wear on one of the arms. Two of the four finials have been repaired. The sofa measures 40" tall, 81" long, and 34.5" wide with a seat height of 21 inches and arm height of 35 inches. Each of the hinged side panels is 21 inches wide, so the sofa can extend to more than 120 inches long when the sides are lowered. See less
