Authentic Thonet Industries, Inc. (USA) armchair, likely mid-20th century (1950s–1970s).
The tag is a classic Thonet Industries compliance/label from their U.S. operations:Distributed by: Thonet Industries, Inc., One Park Avenue, New York 16, N.Y.
Factory: York, PA (they had manufacturing there, especially after moving operations around the 1970s).
Manufacturer/Upholsterer: William McAbee (number 375) — this appears to be the maker of the upholstered components.
Materials listed: Urethane foam + blended cotton felt (95%/5%), confirming it's not real leather — it's vinyl/PU leather or similar synthetic upholstery, typical for durable commercial/contract furniture of that era.
likely beech — the signature wood used by Thonet across their history. Details from the new photo:Grain and texture: The close-up of the armrest shows a tight, relatively straight grain with subtle figuring and some natural variation. This is very characteristic of beech after it's been stained dark (reddish-brown/walnut tone).
Construction: Solid wood (not veneer), with clean joinery where the arm meets the upright. The surface has a smooth finish with minor wear marks typical of vintage use.
Thonet Industries (the U.S. maker on your tag) followed the same traditions as the original Austrian/German Thonet company: beech was their go-to for strength, workability, and durability in both bentwood and straight-frame commercial chairs like yours.
Beech is dense, heavy, and holds up extremely well in institutional/contract furniture — exactly what this chair was built for. The dark stain was common to give it a richer, more formal look while hiding minor imperfections.
