An elegant French Louis XVI style desk or vanity chair dating from the early 20th century. Crafted from solid hardwood, the piece boasts a striking neoclassical gondola-shaped barrel back featuring a finely turned openwork baluster rail. The swept arm supports are elegantly embellished with hand-finished, carved leaf scrolling highlighted by delicate parcel-gilt (gold-leaf) accents. The chair rests firmly on four tapered, fluted column legs capped with classic ring turnings and rosette corner blacks at the frame junctions. The generous circular seat has been entirely refreshed in recent decades with a premium jacquard/brocade textile displaying an elaborate 18th-century style floral motif with pomegranate and scrollwork designs, finished with a matching cream piping edge. The structural frame remains perfectly stable, presenting a gorgeous time-honoured patina.
