A fine American captain's chair featuring the traditional Federal-style stenciled details on a Windsor chair style frame - a low-back armchair with a curved, horseshoe-shaped crest rail and armrest supported by turned spindles.
Built from solid wood with a dark, distressed black-painted finish that reveals reddish-brown undertones from age and wear.
The curved backrest displays a gold-painted Federal era eagle with outstretched wings flanked by stars.
Fine gold pinstriping outlines the seat, backrest, and leg stretchers, complemented by gold-painted rings on the turned legs and spindles.
Often categorized as "Hitchcock-style" or "Federal Style," these chairs are collectable for their comfortable seats and stenciled or hand-painted accents on the spindles and legs - displaying an early form of the American manufacturing process, as referenced to Lambert Hitchcock, famous for designing and producing the Hitchcock chair.
