Produced in the celebrated z4827 pattern introduced in 1914, the bowl represents one of the earliest and most recognisable designs from the fairyland series.

the ruby lustre exterior is enriched with gilded ornament and gold borders, while the iridescent mother-of-pearl interior is decorated with four butterflies and an elaborate floral medallion centred by a gilded rose. The pan-fei border around the rim completes the composition.

the ruby colourway is among the most distinctive variations of the fairyland range and was produced in comparatively limited numbers. A faint z4827 pattern number remains visible on the base. Fairyland lustre transformed wedgwood's position within the luxury ceramics market and remains highly regarded by collectors for its technical complexity and distinctive visual character.
