Rare example of 19thC English Victorian era standing boot jacks. Fabricated in the Aesthetic Movement style, consisting of a gilt-accented, ebonized walnut frame with the original, petit point needlework central panel featuring a folk art scene of the hardy boot cobbler transporting his wares.
These lovely pieces would be displayed prominently in the entry hall of grand manors and British country homes, serving both functional and societal purposes. The former, to remove soiled leather riding boots upon entering without having to bend down; the latter, as a highly decorative item signaling one's class and sophistication to all who visited.
Boot jacks from this era are extremely rare. Our extensive research only uncovered 2 other examples. We are not textile experts but believe that the needlework on this one could be restored as the material loss is primarily in the background, not the figural section, of the piece.
Dimensions : 11.5"W x 15.5"D x 30.5"H.
Condition: As-found; frame structure and finish are in good, antique condition exhibiting wear consistent with their almost 140+ years of use. Some wobble and looseness but still usable as intended or perfect for display. While parts of the needlework panel are highly distressed with associated material loss, the figural portion in still in good condition and intact, as shown. We believe it to be suitable for restoration. As-is, it remains charming to behold.
