Original 1854 hand-colored Audubon lithograph featuring the Common American Deer, also known as the Common or Virginian Deer. This is Plate CXXXVI from the first Royal Octavo edition of Audubon and Bachman’s The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, Volume III.
The plate is after John Woodhouse Audubon and was lithographed by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia. The deer are shown in a wooded landscape beside water, with warm hand-applied color, fine natural history detail, and the quiet decorative presence that makes Audubon’s animal subjects so enduring.
Presented in a warm wood frame with archival-quality double matting in a dark forest green and cool chocolate palette. The matting gives the piece a refined, library-like presentation while complementing the earthy tones of the lithograph. No adhesive has been applied to the antique print.
Includes two accompanying original text pages for Cervus Virginianus / Common American Deer, including the page referencing Plate CXXXVI. These pages provide original source context and support the identification, edition, and authenticity of the lithograph.
A handsome framed 19th-century natural history work with desirable American wildlife subject matter, strong color, and excellent decorative appeal for a traditional interior, study, library, or collected gallery wall.

The original hand-colored lithograph displays well, with warm color, strong deer detail, and an attractive wooded landscape composition. As expected for an 1854 paper work, the print shows age-appropriate toning, scattered foxing, light spotting, and minor handling wear. These signs of age are visible but do not overpower the image or diminish its overall decorative impact. Presented in a warm wood frame with archival-quality double matting. No adhesive has been applied to the antique print. Includes two accompanying original text pages with age-appropriate toning and handling wear. less
