Whimsical, sculptural, and impossible to ignore, this vintage “A Very Handy Bowl Indeed” centerpiece bowl from the TMS Vitruvian Collection transforms an everyday object into a striking work of art. Overlapping sculpted hands encircle the vessel, appearing to collectively support and cradle the bowl in a playful yet thought-provoking composition.
Rendered in an off-white, plaster-like ceramic composite material, with remarkable dimensional detail, this piece embodies the Surrealist spirit often associated with the work of Piero Fornasetti and other makers who blurred the line between decorative object and sculpture. The interior bears the original inscription, “A Very HANDY bowl indeed!”, adding an extra touch of wit and charm.
The Vitruvian collection consisted of 20 or so sculptural art pieces, all released in very limited quantities and each design available for only a few months. They are highly collectible in the USA and internationally, and have fetched impressive prices at auction.
The perpetual designs; faces, lips, breasts, fingers and this, the bowl of perpetual hands are the most desired pieces. The entire collection began in 2004 and was discontinued in 2009 and rarely come to market, and when they do, often have condition issues.
There is a patina that is part of the design. It is not dirt or discoloration. The pieces are off white. The darker patina shadows the intricate detailing giving the piece more depth visually.
Equally at home on a dining table, kitchen island, console, or cocktail table, this substantial centerpiece functions beautifully as a fruit bowl, decorative vessel, or standalone sculptural object. Its unusual design makes it an instant conversation piece and a wonderful addition to eclectic, modern, Hollywood Regency, or contemporary interiors.

Minor surface marks and wear consistent with age and use. The bowl features intentional hand-applied shading and antiqued detailing throughout, designed to accentuate the sculptural form and dimensional hand motif. This tonal variation is original to the design and should not be mistaken for discoloration. Overall, the piece presents very well. less
