Early 20th Century Bontok or Ifugao Lidded Basket - Philippine
The Bontok and Ifugao constructed baskets are made of bamboo, abaca, and rattan. No surface decoration was used beyond the natural pattern of the weave. Bontok storage baskets are generally narrow towards the mouth and bulge at the waist. The shape given to rice baskets supposedly mimics that of ancient Chinese porcelain jars, which are considered precious. Like the Ifugao kalbong and ulbong, these are single-rod coiled baskets. The dark brown or black color of Bontok and Ilfugao storage baskets resulted from the special heat-conserving construction of their houses. There are no windows, and the smoke from the hearth tends to permeate the small structure, resulting in a sooty black finish on many objects that remain indoors.
These baskets are commonly found in many museums around the world, including leading anthropology museums, due to their incredible craftsmanship, style and utilitarian importance in these tribes. This basket will add a sophisticated and incredible earthy element to any dwelling.

It shows signs of heavy patina through use and storage, including light scratches, wear patterns on edges and corners, which is part of the grand allure of these in incredible baskets. Its post use was reserved to home design elements in greater Los Angeles and it retains its original gorgeous smoke hued color and shape. Similar examples in very similar condition are displayed in museums throughout the world. It is rare to find these with the handles still attached. less
